We are proud to honour nurses and curate history through the Vivian Bullwinkel Project, which aims to erect the first ever sculpture of a nurse on the grounds of the Australian War Memorial. Trained as a nurse prior to her military career, we believe that Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel’s AO, MBE, ARRC, ED, FNM character of strength, fortitude, leadership, empathy, skill and integrity is indicative of the Australian nursing ethos.
There is no more appropriate time than now to acknowledge nursing. 2020 has been a historic year for this remarkable profession. The World Health Organization declared it the first ever Year of the Nurse and the Midwife and nurses around the globe were catapulted into the spotlight through their vital role in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During this pandemic our nurses have, once again, risen to the challenges at hand and so this memorial is to honour all Australian nurses for their service today and throughout history.
