Rural Nurse Leadership Scholarships

The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) Foundation in collaboration with Bupa is delighted to offer six scholarships for rural registered nurses who are Mid-Career Nurse Leaders to complete a six-month Mid-Career Nurse Leadership Program in 2022.

Three scholarships will be offered in recognition of Sister Nancy Harris and three scholarships offered in recognition of Sister Mary Eleanor McGlade.

The Mid-Career Nurse Leadership Program will enhance the capacity and capability of registered nurses who have the experience and capacity to strongly influence organisations, team cultures and practices. It will challenge nurses who are passionate about advancing their career, while giving them the confidence in their ability to lead change in a rapidly reforming environment and make a difference to their community. The program aims to develop the skillset of participants to lead health workplace cultures through innovation, redesign and change.

The scholarships will be awarded to the applicants who can best demonstrate their suitability in their response to the selection criteria.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the scholarship applicants must:

  • be currently registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
  • be a registered nurse with more than six years of professional experience and working or aspiring to work in leadership roles within the health or aged care system
  • have the capacity to attend the five-day face-to-face masterclass
  • have the ability to complete the six-month Mid-Career Nurse Leadership Program (see Program information)
  • work in an Australian rural area described by the Modified Monash Model as a registered nurse whom also resides within the MM3 to MM7 categories.

To apply you will need:

  • a current resume outlining more than six years of professional experience and employment in leadership roles within the health or aged care system
  • copy of current nurse registration
  • confirmation of residential address, such as current electricity bill or rates notice
  • to identify a workplace sponsor who will support you during the program. The primary role of the sponsor will be to act as a sounding board for thoughts and ideas and to help ensure the participant feels supported and energised during the program
  • a letter of support from your line manager outlining your ability to complete the program within the six month timeframe
  • to respond to the selection criteria outlined in this application.

Selection criteria

Scholarships will be awarded on the recommendation of the selection committee and will be based on the following criteria:

  1. Commitment to advancing rural nurse leadership inclusive of being patient / consumer focused, the promotion of rural nurse leadership at all times aims to improve rural health and health care outcomes for patients / consumers and the community more broadly within a rural location. Demonstrate your commitment to rural health nursing leadership, provide supporting documentation regarding your professional experience working in rural areas, promoting better health outcomes for rural health care consumers.

  2. Commitment to change management and or quality change within the workplace, displaying leadership in nursing within a rural location.

  3. Anticipated impact of the Mid-Career Nurse Leadership Program on the applicant’s career, particularly in regard to advancing nursing leadership in a rural location.

  4. Demonstrated ability to write well and to construct a plan for change management or quality change management.

  5. Demonstrated professional achievements in a clinical, education, leadership, or academic setting.

Value of scholarship

Each successful applicant will receive a scholarship that will cover the cost of:

  • Australian College of Nursing Mid-Career Nurse Leadership Program
  • Travel and accommodation up to $3,000
